When it comes to beer, I like to taste the grain. It’s really as simple as that. It doesn’t matter if it’s wheat, barley, or some combination thereof, as long as I can taste what I believe to be the essence of a beer, then color me happy.
So it should shock exactly no one that I am a fan of hefeweizens, known by some as “wheat beers”, but really just a subset of the larger wheat beer variety. Unfiltered, and made with a 50-50 grain mixture of wheat and barley, hefeweizens feel as if that these is what beers should be, in the grand scheme of things. In a perfect world, the Big Two would make this style rather than their watered down lagers.
And no, I don’t add a slice of lemon to this. For god sakes people, let’s treat this beer with some respect, shall we?
Appearance: Nice orange coloring, sort of an apple cider kind of look, strong head with medium length retention.
Smell: Strong grain smell with a small hint of hops. Solid and full bodied without being overpowering.
Taste: A little weak on the finish, but a nice start crescendo-ing into the bready wheat taste that hefeweizens are known for.
Mouthfeel:Crisp and lively on the tongue, and holds well during the slight finish.
Drinkability: A good hefeweizen that should be tried by all fans of this variety. Not great, but very good.
