Botulism Poisoning From Castleberry’s Food Products

The Castleberry’s recall has now expanded from canned hot dog chili to “all things made by Castleberry“, which includes both meat and meatless products produced at the plant that might still be in commerce.

Botulism is (are?) one of those things in which one does not mess around. It’s a paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin. Symptoms of botulism include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. The illness can cause paralysis, respiratory failure and death. Symptoms usually occur from 18 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food

I truly hate these types of stories. Nationwide food recalls are really the worst. They’re bad because a negligent company put a large segment of the population at risk. They’re bad because it’s relatively simple to prevent this from happening (typically, commercially canned goods are required to undergo a “botulinum cook” at 121°C for 3 minutes).
