Ever since I was a young girl, grilled cheese and tomato soup has been my number one comfort meal. A nicely toasted piece of sourdough, melted Munster cheese, a dollop of ketchup, and a hot bowl of tomatoe-y goodness. Could there be anything better? Needless to say, even as an adult, I find that sometimes there just isn’t anything that feels more like home than a grilled cheese and soup combo.
On a recent trip to northwest Portland, now more hip-ly known as the Pearl District, I stopped in at Sip & Kranz, a fabulously modern coffeeshop on the corner of a beautiful park square. Dubbed as a ‘coffee lounge’, Sip & Kranz offers a full coffee bar as well as friendly little collections of high back wicker chairs, wood tables, and reliable Wi-Fi.
But even better? They actually have great food and, as I pleasantly found, the most outstanding grilled cheese I’ve had in a long time. Perfectly pressed in a toasty ciabatta bread, my yummy grilled cheese included gouda, cheddar, and my own personal dairy weakness, tasty brie. Though I was a bit disappointed the cafe was ketchup-less, I found the Sip & Kranz 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese to be solitarily tastebud-friendly. Surprisingly, I passed on the Tomato Bisque, but I’m told it’s perfectly complimentary to their memorable grilled cheese.
According to local hip mama blogs, Sip & Kranz is also recommended as a great family-friendly spot, offering an impressive ‘Just for Kidz’ menu.
