The Cleveland Clinic is repeatedly ranked by U.S.News & World Report Ranks as the number one heart hospital in America (Ten years in a row). By all accounts, if you have heart disease, this is the place to go.
So why do they have a McDonald’s in the heart of their hospital?
It’s a question that Dr. Toby Cosgrove not only wants an answer. He also wants to see them removed from the Cleveland Clinic campus, excusing them from the remaining 10 years on a 20-year lease.
McDonald’s plan of attack: To argue that, comparatively, the Illinois-based chain is just as healthy if not healthier than Au Bon Pain, Starbucks and Subway – the three other restaurants open on the campus of the Clinic, which has been rated for the last decade by U.S. News and World Report as the nation’s No. 1 cardiac care center.
So they’ll trot out their defense by showing their collection of salads and yogurt parfaits, while glossing over the fact that they hang their hat on burgers and fries, the ever evil McNuggets, and the carbonated sugar water known as Coca-Cola.
I don’t necessarily blame McDonald’s in all of this. They are only behaving as they always have. You cannot ask a shark to not behave as a shark. Dr. Cosgrove, as head of the CLinic, is well within his rights to make his Hospital even healthier. The real blame goes on the fool who allowed the shark into the Clinic’s food court to begin with.
