What does George W. eat?

If you’re laying odds that it’s not prosciutto and figs, you’re on the right track:

The first time she (the First Lady’s social secretary Lea Berman) met (White House chef Walter) Scheib she told him that she wanted the White House kitchen to produce meals like those her husband had enjoyed at one of Marco Pierre White’s restaurants in London. Mr. White, who once had three Michelin stars, has served everything from braised pigs’ trotters to truffled parsley soup with poached eggs.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘I’m not sure the president is going to be big on that,’ ˮ said Mr. Scheib, who had made many an enchilada and grilled-cheese sandwich on white bread with Kraft singles for President Bush.

There’s also a great bit on how the Ms. Berman would send Chef “marked recipes from cookbooks and magazines, like Martha Stewart Living, along with instructions that he “make it look just like the picture.ˮ “

Female Chef in the White House?

The First lady (whom I have no beef with…her husband on the other hand…) is being overwhelmed on ideas and suggestions on just exactly shom should replace the outgoing chef. Recently, the Women Chef and Restaurateurs (WCR) brought the idea of a woman as full-time executive chef at the White House to public attention. Only a week earlier, Superchefblog announced the winner of her own poll on who should work in the White House : Mary Sue Millken and Susan Feniger (whom I voted for).

Juliette (ther person behind superchef blog) is at it again, with another poll of 40 Chefs, all female. The winner will be recommended to the open Executive Chef position at the White House. Head over there and vote…

For the record, I voted for Seattle’s own Tamara Murphy of Brasa.

Vote for the new White House Chef

The White House has announced that current executive chef Walter Scheib is leaving “to pursue other activities” after nearly 11 years of service. How important is this position? Whenever there is a state dinner, who do you think does the cooking? You betcha, it’s the person in this position. It’s a high profile position to take, possibly the highest position in the world.

So who do you think should replace Chef Scheib? Juliette Rossant thought about this question and has proposed the following: why not have top American chefs co-cook for state dinners — one guest chef per dinner?

Me? I voted for Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, simply because I miss their old Food TV show “Two Hot Tamales”.
