I am currently in Tucson, staying in one of the many hotels one often finds next to an airport. It is also, quite possibly, the only area in Tucson where one cannot find a decent dinner.
Sure, I could pay 10 dollars for a room service hamburger, or sixteen dollars for a Cobb Salad. I could even put on my walking shoes and head to one of the five fast food restaurants. But are these decent dinners?
When I asked one of the Tucson co-workers what’s the deal with this area, she responded glumly. “There are no places for a good dinner by the airport”.
I’m a little stunned. How can an area that has twelve hotels not have a sit down restaurant within walking distance? I’ve done more than my fair share of travel, and have stayed at many hotels within airport areas. Tucson is the first city where this lack of restaurants is so pronounced.
This had put a new spin on the business dinner that was held last night. After two nights of peanut butter sandwiches, apples, and Diet Red Bulls, a warm meal held the promise of a special treat akin to a Thanksgiving feast. La Parrilla Suiza was our destination.
The meal? Parrillada Mixta, spicy sausage and beef strips served with cheese in a green pepper. The dish literally came in a serving trough, which was a bit disconcerting. The cheese, pooled in the pepper, looked more like a drink than the dip it was designed to be.
It was perfect. It wasn’t the best meal I’ve ever had, but after being cooped up in a generic hotel room reviewing various database development documents, and no decent food for miles, it was welcome. Joyous even.
