The High Costs of Cereality

The Ethicureans take on Cereality and ask the following question:

Have we honestly reached a level so low in our national eating disorder that people will pay for the novelty of eating a bowl of cold cereal, in a restaurant that sells only cereal — the same kind of cereal that every major supermarket chain sells — when for less than a dollar more, they could have a whole box?

As we come from a culture where people spend an excessive amount of money on bottled water, face equally high markups for popcorn in movie theaters, and have no problem in plopping down two dollars for twenty ounces of flavored carbonated water, I think the answer is that we reached this level a long, long time ago.
