The Original Three Musketeers

A few days ago, the folks over at Mental Floss provided a bit of trivia regarding the naming of the 3 Musketeers candy bar, specifically regarding its name.

….it’s because the bar was originally split into three pieces with three different flavors – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. When vanilla and strawberry flavoring became hard to come by during WWII, Mars decided to go all chocolate. Studies had shown it was the preferred flavor of the three anyway.

Now many of you are thinking to your self, “Damn! Vanilla 3 Musketeers? Strawberry 3 Musketeers? I would SO search out that candy bar!”

You are not the only one. Mental Floss was so taken with the idea that they’ve created a facebook page, with the intent of showing the Mars corporation the demand for those flavors. Their hope is that Mars will see just how popular of an idea it is, and submit to the will of the people, a la Betty White and Saturday Night Live.

First things first. I did “become a fan” of the idea, because like you, I’d be all over a strawberry flavored 3 Musketeers bar.

Additionally, the Mars company has been playing the new flavors for 3 Musketeers of late, with a raspberry dark chocolate debuting a few years ago, and my personal favorite, the mint chocolate 3 Musketeers arriving soon afterwards.

But it’s important to point out that the folks at Mars are notorious for doing things their way. If I had to pick a company least likely to respond to a customer campaign, Mars would be one of my finalists for that position. Anyone who has read Joël Glenn Brenner’s wonderful book The Emperors of Chocolate: Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars will have read that the Mars company is, at its core, not a Willy Wonka-esque company, delighted by the fact that they put smiles on the faces of millions of people around the world. Rather, they come across as quite sterile, industrial, and commonplace. Some would even go as far as to say they are humorless. In other words, they are just like 99% of the companies in America today.

But who knows? Perhaps they already have vanilla and/or strawberry in the works. Perhaps they will listen to the desires of some. Weirder things have happened in instances like these.

And any company that can come up with the Mint 3 Musketeers can’t be all that bad, right?
