As I sit here back at home from my sojourn to Vancouver, chowing on slices of a Granny Smith while an apple pie bakes in the oven, I think to myself: Apples are the perfect fruit.
Slight enough to carry in your hand(unlike melons or berries), less prone to bruising (like peaches and bananas), and a shlef life that’s fairly reasonable (unlike pears, which seem to turn to mush when you turn your back), apples offer varieties in taste and mouthfeel which is distinctive from one vaiety to the next. You can have them tart, or you can have them sweet. You can have them firm, or you can have them soft.
It’s no wonder the’ve been around for so long (since at least 6000 BC); they’ve always been able to provide humans with something that makes us want to keep them around.
So, can anyone tell me of any fruit which isn’t as convenient as an apple? ‘Cause I would love to know.
